The Tension Bonus System, or TBS for short, is a gameplay mechanic of the Shikigami no Shiro series where the player's normal shot will increase in rate of fire and damage, while at the same time, increasing the amount of points earned. The multiplier ranges from x1 to x8 maximum, varying from the player's distance from an enemy or enemy fire.
The Tension Bonus System range varies as the player becomes closer or further away from the enemy, enemy fire, or obstacles in the player's way. If the player is far away from the enemy or enemy fire, the player will only receive little benefits in terms of points and firepower. However, if the player is close enough to graze the enemy or enemy fire, the player will maximize the points they can earn from coins and dramatically increase the offensive potential of their normal shot.
Merits of the Tension Bonus SystemEdit
- Merit 1: More Coins Appear
This is more noticeable when destroying enemies with Shikigami attacks, which causes enemies to drop more coins than normal shots. Enemies will drop more coins when defeated, thus earning more points.
- Merit 2: High Tension Shot
When the player grazes bullets or an enemy, the player's normal shot will change into High Tension Shot. High Tension Shots have higher rate of fire and damage than the normal shot, and for some characters, stronger than their shikigami attacks.
- Merit 3: x8 Action
In Shikigami no Shiro II and Shikigami no Shiro III, additional points are earned for destroying enemies with a maximum Tension Bonus System magnification at the end of each part of the stage (or the entire stage itself in Shikigami no Shiro III). The player can see how many coins collected and enemies defeated with a maximum magnification on screen.
High Tension MAXEdit
A new feature seen in Shikigami no Shiro III, the player will be in High Tension state temporarily by pressing both Shot and Bomb buttons simultaneously, or by pressing the High Tension MAX button. High Tension MAX also feature extra benefits that the player would not gain normally by grazing. One bomb is required in order to use High Tension MAX.
- Benefit 1: Invincibility
The player will have a split-second of invincibility upon initiating High Tension MAX.
- Benefit 2: Fixed TBS Magnification x8
The Tension Bonus System's magnification will be fixed at x8, regardless of the player's distance from the enemy or enemy fire.
- Benefit 3: x1.5 Coins Appear
Enemies will drop coins worth x1.5 more than normal. Defeating enemies with shikigami attacks will drop x12 the amount of coins.
